Wishing you a Happy and Inventive New Year!

It has been a momentous year at Barefoot - and probably an historic one for the networking industry as a whole. For the first time in the history of networking, highest-performance and full pipeline programmability are delivered with no penalty on price or power.

  • As we come to the end of the year, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on our outstanding achievements:
  • First, we launched our company out of stealth, telling the world about the revolutionary technology we’ve been developing. We announced Tofino™ - our 6.5 Tb/s Ethernet switch ASIC implementing the world’s only “protocol independent” switch architecture called PISA™, and Capilano™ - Tofino’s companion Software Development Environment (SDE).
  • We’ve raised over $150 million in funding to date from not only top-tier venture capitalists, but also end users of our technology like Google, Goldman Sachs, Alibaba, Tencent and numerous others.
  • In a testament to our out-of-this-world engineering team, we’ve taped-out Tofino, brought it up in our labs, and sampled it to our customers in record time. Tofino broke many records - it is the world’s fastest Ethernet switch ASIC at 6.5 Tb/s, has a fully P4™ programmable pipeline and supports the highest density port configurations.
  • Capilano, our Software Development Environment (SDE), has been shipping to customers for almost a couple of years now (long before we had Tofino in hand), enabling our customers get a head start in developing and verifying their own P4 programs and integrating and testing their control plane software with P4 data plane.
  • We’ve seen our customers recognizing the benefits of programmable telemetry and analytics capabilities of Tofino. This recognition has enabled them to develop features that will allow for building networks with unprecedented simplicity, reliability and ease-of-operation.
  • We’ve also made significant contributions to P4.org ecosystem in the areas of language definition and evolution, compilers, data plane programs, etc. You can see several of these contributions at P4.org’s Github page - https://github.com/p4lang
  • We’ve demonstrated the power of a P4 programmable data plane at various events like OCP Summit, Open Networking Summit, P4 Workshops, Netdev Conferences, etc.

As we enter 2017, we are looking forward to an exciting and record breaking year! You will see multiple products coming to market using our technology. You will also see many unique and powerful use cases come to life. Programmability brings ease of use and simplicity to solving complex problems - with P4 and Tofino we are bringing the same benefits to networking.
